Moving From Maui

MOVING FROM MAUI

The process, the art, the mess December, 2004

EASY COME, EASY GO

Bob sits on the tailgate of the Maui Recycling Truck we used to move into the place we are now moving out of with some of the very same plants we brought here nearly 19 months ago.

FROM CHAOS

This is the worst part about moving for us – total chaos. Camille rips and crumbles packing paper while wrapping knick knacks.

TO ORDER

32 boxes, buckets, etc. headed for storage in Colorado and staged just minutes before the truck arrives December 8th.  Amazingly, the movers scheduled us for a dry day. The weather  had been soaking wet for two days prior and resumed the downpours the next day.

DIGITAL STORAGE

This hex sign (arm and trout) that Bob commissioned someone to paint years ago in Colorado didn’t make it into storage this time, so Bob took the time to photograph it and commit it to digital storage before hauling it to Maui EKO to be composted.

MAUI EKO

On December 11th, we borrowed Shaun’s flatbed one more time to haul the last bits of stuff to Maui EKO and the Central Maui Landfill.

THE PAST RESURRECTED

This section of landfill is in the process of being excavated. Some people say they were looking for a manhole and others say they were looking for the man.

CARDBOARD BOXES – Loudon Wainwright III

I’m gonna go to the supermarket,

I’m gonna go to the liquor store,

I’m gonna get me some cardboard boxes,

You know what them boxes are for,

I’m gonna rent me a U-Haul trailer,

Hook it on the back of my old car,

Call up some of my stronger buddies,

That’s what your strong buddies are for

We’re gonna move,

We’re gonna move

Give it to the Salvation Army or the Goodwill,

We got so much junk it’s a joke

Wrap a knickknack in some old newspaper

I know it was a present, but the damn thing broke

Your old shoes and my old T-shirts,

My strong buddies crave ice-cold beers,

Don’t throw that away, it’s a family heirloom,

I’ve had that ashtray for fifteen years

We’re gonna move,

We’re gonna move

We’re gonna empty out our old place

And move into a brand-new better space

We got the books and the records and the tapes and the pictures

And the pots and the pans and all the breakable glass

The living room couch and the dining room table,

The washer and the dryer, what a pain in the ass

The TV and the home entertainment center,

The box spring and a queen-size bed

The Christmas decorations and the bureau and the playpen,

If we had a piano, I think I’d drop dead

We’re gonna move,

We’re gonna move

At the end of the day, the old place is empty

And the new place houses all of our stuff

Hunt back all the crap in the cardboard boxes,

It wasn’t that bad, it wasn’t that rough

But my strong buddies look a little bit grumpy,

I don’t know why, I broke my butt,

Tomorrow we’ll call up the telephone company

And get another set of house keys cut.

I can tell by the look on your face

You just love your better brand-new space, baby.
