Walking on the Wild Side

WALKING ON THE WILD SIDE

Pamela takes us touring through the Real World in Glacier Bay National Park

July 23 through August 21, 2005

KAYAKING IN THE BAY – July 23

Pamela dusted off her guiding skills and outfitted us with a pair of kayaks complete with paddles, rain suits and waterproof gear bags. All that work, getting things cleaned up and ready didn’t dampen her sense of humor, however – a fact proven by the photo on the right. Doesn’t Bob look smart in his purple rain pants and brown boots?

TAKING THE PLUNGE

Before you know it, we were in the bay, trying to look natural despite the moisture behind our ears.

A testament to her patience and skill as a photographer, Pamela waited until we both had
our paddles in the air on the same side of the kayak before snapping this picture.

MAKING IT LOOK EASY

Pamela is obviously in her element here.

IN PLAIN VIEW – July 25

Now what’s going on?  Looks like Pam is taking Camille for a ride.

Pam took us down the street to see this wreck in the woods. Bob and Camille sure look relaxed now that they have landed in Alaska.

It was all a bit eerie at first.

REENACTMENT

And then we started clowning around. Camille and Pam simulate the look of the wreck shortly after impact.

A WALK ON THE BEACH – July 29

Bob looks right at home as he walks along the beach outside Gustavus.

Doesn’t Camille look cute in her yellow rain pants?

BARTLETT RIVER HIKE – July 31

INSIDE THE VISITOR’S CENTER

Camille takes a load off after biking the 5 miles to the visitor center.

TRAIL TO THE RIVER

The forest was spectacular, bathed in shafts of sunlight and padded with moss.

PRETTY AS A PICTURE

Our walk through the woods brought us here.

Time for a little rest.

Camille and Pamela scout for large animals on the banks of the river. We saw lots of moose tracks and a few bear signs, lots of ripe berries and other edibles. For a look at some of the plants we harvested along the way, go to Eat, Drink and be Merry

TIDE POOLS

Full of barnacles, hermit crabs and seaweed.

ANOTHER HIKE

On August 4th, we rode our bikes to the other side of the Bartlett River Trail and hiked in to a small lake.  Photo Courtesy of Pam

THE LAKE

Pam scans the shore of this pretty lake for critters while Camille peers, critter-like at Bob from behind a tree.

MORE KAYAKING IN THE BAY

In which we ride our bikes 5 miles to the Bay on August 7. Pam is carrying the paddles on her back.

SAME SIGN, DIFFERENT DAY

Bob, out for a ride August 12th on a very warm day.

BACK TO THE DAY AT HAND

Pam snapped this picture of Bob and Camille heading out into the bay.

Camille gazes at the mountains from their little water pod.

It was a beautiful sunny day. Bobbing around on the water in a kayak is soothing to the soul.

Pam is in her element, floating around in her red kayak looking for critters.

LUNCH STOP

We stopped here for lunch, despite the telltale signs of bear, below.

Proof that bears dine mostly on berries.

DEEP RELAXATION

This photo, courtesy of Pamela, is typical. She often combines an image of
pristine landscape with proof of its tranquilizing affect in the foreground.

Bob scans the water for whale spouts.

ROUND THREE – PADDLING THROUGH THE KELP BEDS – August 10th

Starting out in shorts at low tide. Pamela carries a tide book so that she knows which way the current is going to push us in our kayaks and whether or not to take a trip down one of the smaller fingers of the bay.

A RICH GARDEN

The kelp nourishes a rich variety of animal life. This is bull kelp, so named because of its resemblance to a bull whip.

We watched a family of sea otters but were unable to get close enough for a good photograph.
