Elmina and Cape Coast with Amy

Elmina Bay, Hans Cottage and Assase Pa at Cape Coast Revisited – April 11, 2013

FLAGS

A black pirate flag and red flag with swastika were among the many flags aboard the fishing boats in Elmina Harbor.

ELMINA CASTLE

Amy absorbs the history emanating from the compass Christopher Columbus used to set his course to America more than five hundred years ago. Built by the Portuguese in 1482, the castle is the oldest European building south of the Sahara.

ATLANTIC OCEAN

Amy highlights the scale of the wooden fishing boats and looks west along the storied beach behind Elmina Castle.

BOB AND A BOAT

Unable to tie these two photos together, Camille improvises with an uninspired title. And, apparently, an uninspired caption as well. Seriously, one of us obviously found the innovative use of tires on this fishing boat of some interest. The juxtaposition of wood and rubber, old and new, the scarred painted hull, the tiny stopper tire… What that has to do with Bob standing on the beach is anyone’s guess. Please email us if you can think of a connection.

BARNACLE DAMAGE

These are the kinds of holes, we said, that would make Shane crazy.

KITSCH AT HANS COTTAGE

“Don’t blame me!” Bob seemed to say as he obligingly posed beside a, well… endowed wooden sculpture. “Yes, I have breasts, too!” Camille seemed to say, and “Yes, these two photos were my idea.”

CROCODILE

The three of us headed off along the trail to do some bird watching when we were stopped in our tracks by the sight of a giant crocodile. You will have to take our word for it that this animal was easily eight feet long. He/she was missing the end of its tail and just sat there motionless with an open mouth. Rather than walk behind it, we walked around the other way only to find it still there and with its mouth still open.

Although Camille was temped to walk closer, Bob and Amy weren’t so easily lured and turned back to retrace their steps. Camille watched, mesmerized as one of the hotel staff led a party of guests over and photographed them each in turn, each with their hand on the crocodile’s back before she hurried back along the trail.

NO DROWNING ALLOWED

Amy poses in front of a cascade of passion flowers, one of her favorite plants. Bob asked Hans if crocodiles ever got into the swimming pool and he said, not lately.

VEGAN LUNCH

Everything on the table, from the fried mushroom batter to the blue cheese dressing was vegan at Assase Pa in Cape Coast.
