Rice and Lotus

Right next door, at Edible Earthscapes some unusual things are growing. – July, 2015

NOT AT ALL MAINSTREAM

The crops our friends are growing next door range from conventional (tomatoes, cucumbers) to unexpected (burdock root, rice and lotus.) The rice paddies make a nice home for frogs and turtles, too.

IRRESISTIBLE

This sight sent Camille back up the hill for the camera. For sake of scale, the bee measures over an inch in length.

EXOTIC BEAUTY

The lotus blends mammoth leaves, heavy pods, graceful stems and flowers that dance on the breeze.

THREE WEEKS LATER

The rice is high and there has been another flush of blooms.

PODS

The pods are mesmerizing and the young seeds edible, but most folks eat the lotus root.
