WINCHESTER, VIRGINIA - A Side Trip

Winchester is just up the street from Keezletown and Harrisonburg, and since it is the birthplace of Joe Bageant, champion of the working class and one of our favorite authors, we decided to stop in for a stroll and a couple of pints.

PICTURESQUE IN A HISTORICAL WAY

They have done a lot to restore and preserve history here.

INTERACTIVE AND INFORMATIVE PUBLIC ART

Bob stands on the "May" square of a sundial and determines it is five o'clock.  We found a portrait of Frederick Douglas in a long mural with many other historical figures.

A HAUNTED TAVERN

We stopped for a pint in the Cork Street Tavern and learned that the table Camille is sitting in is haunted as are the administrative offices upstairs.

DALLYING AT PICCADILLY'S

Here's where time spiraled into a lost vortex.  Piccadilly's was once visited by a runaway train, which crashed through the brick wall into the pub.

WITH PROFESSIONAL COOKS

Eli and Charlie entertained us with stories about the pub and their lives over a couple of beers.  They gave Bob a tour of the place, took a peek into the kitchen and showed us where the wall had been rebuilt after the train crashed into the building.
