STARTING OUT THE MONTH WITH A BANG
Our friends, Jill and Andy live in a very cool little town which is split down the middle by the Haw River. Bynum grew around the mill on the river and there is a bridge between the north and south sides of the Haw which is too narrow for modern day traffic and now serves as a foot bridge. The Bynum bridge also comes in handy as a place for residents to set off their annual fireworks display. Last year the festivities were lost in a torrential downpour. This year we got to experience the home town ambience of Bynum with our friends.
ANKY AND CHRIS
Friends Anky and Chris enjoyed the scene as did we all.
ANDY AND HARUKA
Andy looks like he's being wowed by the display but is probably just talking to Bob. Haruka is beautiful as always.
HOPS AND GOURDS
Bob's Hops are climbing and blooming. This gourd grows in the garden next door.
NEW TENANTS
The hole in the outside wall of our trailer which has had a bird nest in it since the last time we took a photo of it. When we looked at the photo on the right, we noticed something that looked like an insect. Four days later Camille took another photo, aiming the camera up into the hole and found it to be a wasp nest.
STROLLING OILSEED
Camille caught Bob looking pleased with himself during an evening stroll. Click on his picture for a bigger file. We also captured this cute photo of Matt and Dana's 'stick house.' No one can figure out why the person who built this house installed the windows on the side facing our trailer rather than west into the view of the woods and hay fields.
PARTY AT SCOTT AND RACHEL'S
In honor of those with July birthday's, Scott and Rachel threw a great party at their place. Scott and Bob did some juggling and later, Rachel cut the cake. More photos here: Moncure Deck Party - July, 2009
COOKIE GETS AFTER IT
Camille loves her Japanese cane knife and never misses an opportunity to put it to good use. When she noticed the steps next door could use a trim, she walked over with her cane knife and had a go at it. Click on the photo for a better look at Camille and her knife in action.
FIRE ANT DRENCH TRIALS
As part of his new job, Bob and co-worker Jill (of Jill and Andy fame) test drove the fire ant killer.
SHIITAKE!
The shiitake logs are fruiting again, so Bob brought one inside and put it under lights. A few days later, we were eating 'cheese steaks' without the cheese or the steaks.
SUMMER BOUNTY
From the Community College, farm stands, and our own backyard - we are wallowing in fresh produce!
VISITORS
When Camille went out to the compost pile one evening, she was surprised to find a turtle snacking on bugs from the compost. The next morning, she found the turtle beneath the clothesline and took a couple of pictures. We have not seen the turtle since that day.
A couple of days later, Camille found a Black Swallowtail Chrysalis in the garden.
LOCAL LUNCH UNDER THE TENT
Tami's dad lent the Eco-Industrial Park his tent for the Paperhand Puppet Intervention movie screening and Pecha Kucha two weeks later. Jack and Adah decided it would be a great place to serve lunch the day they cooked and they were right.
RIDING LESSONS
Kate coaches David on Tonka and Camille shares a word with Rebekah on Zan at Head's Up Therapeutic Riding. More photos here: Riding Lessons at Heads Up
KATE AND BART THROW THEIR OWN GOING AWAY PARTY
They will be missed by everyone in our community. We're happy that they are following their hearts, first with a visit to the community they left behind in El Salvador and then on to Raleigh where they both plan on going to classes at NC State. Kate holds one of their three young hens. Bart takes his turn at the game of the evening, "Dizzy Bat."

BOB DIGS POTATOES
We Irish sure love our potatoes! Bob, a.k.a. "The Shoveler" is perfectly equipped to harvest these delightful tubers from his garden. He also harvested some beautiful leeks and Camille made three quarts of savory Potato Leek Soup. Click on the photos for a closer look.
GUANTANAMO KEEPS ON PRODUCING
Our garden just won't quit. From these offerings and much more like it, we made Candied Carrots and few quarts of Spaghetti Sauce.
TOMATO SOUP
Bob took these tomatoes, mostly from his garden and some from friends and CSA's and processed them into three or four quarts of delicious Tomato Soup.
THIS MONTH'S QUOTE:
"Financial collapse pulled away the curtain on the Wall Street alchemists to reveal an illusion factory that paid its managers outrageous sums for creating phantom wealth unrelated to the production of anything of real value. They were merely creating claims on the real wealth created by others - a form of theft." - David Korten from "Agenda for a New Economy"
