Team USA at the 39th annual Sapporo Snow Festival, February 2–6, 2008

THE TEAM

Randy Amys, Leon Laucirica & Steve Mercia. (Team Manager Charley Scott not shown)

THE MODEL - Desert Lullaby

THE MESSAGE

The mystery behind why the waxing moon
Disappears in the new phase,
Even the moon is entitled
To a snooze once every 28 days.

THE BLOCK

Every competition begins with a big block of snow.  Each block of snow has a sculpture inside.  It is the artist's mission to free the sculpture from within the block.

THE PROCESS

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 2 - TRAVELING FROM THE USA TO JAPAN

"We arrived on Friday night after a long flight and a jump into the future. Everything went well except the airline lost Randy's suitcase with all his clothes in it.  On Saturday he had to buy some new clothes to get by until his luggage showed up.  A nice lady from the Sapporo Communication Department contacted the airlines and tracked  the bag down.  It will be delivered before the start of the carving on Sunday morning so that Randy does not have to wear everyone else's stiff.  Leon, Steve and Randy have been focusing on how the piece will work here in Sapporo and are ready to get started.  We look forward to sharing the competition with all of you." - Randy

SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 3

"The competition started with all the pomp and circumstance of an event in a city of 1.2 million people.  The 39th annual international snow sculpture contest got underway promptly at 10am. Here are the photos from a mild and productive first day. That is Randy, Leon, and Steve in the team photo.  Once again Camille is maintaining the web page.  (Thank you from all the team) Here is the link to the web page.

Enjoy the Super Bowl.  We will be starting the next day during the first quarter." - Randy

MONDAY, FEBRUARY 4

"Good Morning or Good Evening, depending on where you are.  We had a great Monday.  As you can see many of the figures started emerging.  We had some sun this afternoon and the weather cooled down nicely this evening.  Desert Lullaby is starting to snooze in the Arizona sunset with the end of the Super Bowl that was.  We didn't see it but heard the end of the game through play by play for and Air Force guy talking to his friend somewhere else in the world.  It was a great way for the Giants to be the Giant slayers.  They beat the best ever.

Enjoy the progressions and we will talk to you again tomorrow." - Steve, Leon & Randy

TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 5

"What a wonderful day.  The piece is really starting to sing the lullaby and put ol' man moon to sleep.  Check it out, we are turning a few heads." - Randy

"Tomorrow Steve and Randy are off to Nayoro in the afternoon.  Leon will stay behind for some fluff and buff.  Thursday starts the Japan Cup and another three days of sculpting. Time to "Soar!" - Randy

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 6

"We worked hard to get everything completed ahead of schedule so the Steve and Randy could leave for Nayoro as planned.  The morning was spent fluffing and buffing.  Also some time with Team New Zealand, turning them on to the wonders of the PTS and Hackinator 2000." - Randy
