"SOAR"

To be created at the Japan Cup Snow Sculpture Competition, February 7-9, 2008, in Nayoro, Japan

THE TEAM

Team Members: Leon Laucirica, Steve Mercia & Randy Amys

THE CONCEPT

In man’s quest for the meaning of life, he experiences three stages, infancy, developmental, and adulthood.  As life presents him with challenges, he sometimes finds himself winging it.   Ultimately, his wisdom and maturity let him fly away from the mundane reality of life and soar to new horizons.

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 6

"We boarded the train for Nayoro at 12:35 and enjoyed the rolling countryside of the Hokaido.  Upon our arrival in Nayoro, we checked into the Maple Hotel, unpacked settled in and the enjoyed a relaxing soak in the Japanese Bath at the hotel.  Time to recharge and get ready for the last round." - Randy

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 7

"After a morning of meetings and rule explanations, we participated in the opening ceremony and finally got started on the sculpture.  Steve and Randy put in about seven hours and made some great progress for the first day." - Steve, Leon & Randy

"The adult (addy) stage is pointed to the sky and developmental (lopy) is not far behind.  The snow is amazing and the conditions were perfect for the first day.  A little warm and cooling off well when the sun went down." - Steve, Leon & Randy

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 8

"Another cold day in snow sculptors paradise.  Nice and cold this morning with temps dipping to -22C.  Not sure what that figures to but it was definitely brisk.  The block is great and the planes are starting to cut loose.  What a difficult design, who came up with this anyway?  We are rising to the challenge and look forward to 5pm tomorrow when our marathon week of sculpting will be but a memory.  As you can see from the photos things are getting pretty thin.  No major problems to report, Steve is still working with all of his fingers and toes.  Leon is keeping everyone entertained with his funny limericks.

Can't wait to share the finished piece with you. Bye for now, Steve, Leon & Randy"

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 9

Here it is!  We just completed the piece and it looks pretty good.  We have to change and get back for the closing ceremony.
