RIDING TRAIL AT HEADS UP

July 31, 2008

MOTHER AND DAUGHTER

Karen and Alanna enjoy themselves on the trail with Chance and Abby.  Abby, a pretty paint mare, is Alana's new horse.

Maggie holds Rose while Alanna stands on her back.  Later, Rose enjoys a little grazing while waiting for her bath.

OUR GRACIOUS HOST AND GOOD RIDING BUDDY

There's no other way to say it - riding with Karen is great fun.  She has a wonderful sense of humor, tells a good story and enthusiastically listens to our stories, too.  Karen keeps the Heads Up riding stock on her property and gives them all special care.  On this day, Karen rode her old family horse, Zan who joined the Heads Up program as part of her retirement.  Zan was once in a nasty trailer wreck  which left her knees stiff with scar tissue but she has no problem keeping up with the rest of us.  As you can see, she still has her good looks.

1,000 ACRES AND DOZENS OF TRAILS

Sometimes there are four of us and sometimes three.  On this day, Adah rode Jasper, Karen rode Zan and Camille rode Grendel, below.  Adah also has a great sense of humor.  Between the three of us, we keep each other well entertained.  Jasper is the newcomer to the Heads Up Herd and continues to put on much needed weight each week.  He is funny about crossing water but Adah doesn't seem to mind.  She never loses her seat even when he decides to leap straight up into the air rather than trot across a puddle.

A BREED APART

Camille often rides Grendel, Lisa's Icelandic Horse.  Although this breed is not as tall as most horses, they are strong and designed to carry adults.  Grendel has a great temperament and smooth gaits.  Riding him is a lot like what I imagine it would be like to sit upon a fluffy cloud.  Lisa has done an exceptional job of teaching him good manners.  He really enjoys getting out on the trail with his herd mates.

OTHER CRITTERS

While on the trail, we spotted this handsome black snake which is probably a rat snake.  Back home the goats, Lilly and Milly were curious to see whether we had anything good to eat.

CAMILLE AND ROSE

  \

After a cold week, the weather broke into sunshine just long enough for Camille to enjoy an outing on horseback with her friend, Cecilia, courtesy of Karen from Heads Up Therapeutic Riding.

CECILIA AND ZAN

Cecilia was obviously enjoying this as much as Camille was.  Heads up has access to 1,000 acres of trails.  The horses need exercise before their lessons and Cecilia and I have volunteered to help Karen with this task.

ALANA AND MCLEAN ON THEIR PONIES

Karen's children were a hoot on their tiny ponies, Copper and Mikey!
